Buddhists Sects

Zen Sects

Zen Buddhism originated in China where it is known as Chan.   Zen is also divided into numerous groups such as Soto Zen, Rinzai Zen and others.  Zen was founded by Bodhidharma around 475-480 BC when he arrived in China from India.

Emphasis of Zen is on sitting meditation.  Some sects of Zen also use meditation on koan (riddles).  Zen also has a form of enlightenment known as direct transmission.

Zen is individual oriented, although some zen centers are also family oriented.   Zen services consist mostly of sitting meditation interspersed with walking mediation and some chanting.  Silence is required, therefore it is difficult to take children to these types of services.  Some zen centers offer dharma school for children while the parents attend services.
