Festival of Lights
I am a Dhamma teacher originally from Burma. I live in Sebastopol in N
California and have a small group of students. Last year in Oct I started
to introduce the Festival of Lights which in the Burmese tradition is a
welcome party for the Buddha on his descent from the celestial realms after
teaching his departed mother the deva there.
We decorated and lighted up the house and yard with fairy lights, lamps,
candles and flowers. The party was hosted to Burmese and Thai food and
after that we all trooped outdoors to the Buddha in the yard and offered
lighted candles one by one. Afterwards we chanted evening devotions and
metta ( loving kindness meditation) ending with ringing of bell and offering
each participant flowers.
