Be a Friend to your Child
My child's school sent home a paper of parenting tips from some national parenting
"expert." (Sometimes I wonder if these parenting experts are ever
parents because their tips often seem to have no understanding of parenting
in practice.) The number one tip on the list was "Don't be a friend
to your child." I was totally flabberghasted! My number one rule
in parenting is to be friends with my children. Why?
- Friends talk to each other.
- Friends respect each other.
- Friends are honest with each other.
- Friends have fun together.
- Friends are sometimes hard on each other.
- Friends don't embarrass each other.
- Friends try to understand each other.
- Friends don't let friends drink, do drugs, or otherwise get into trouble.
- Friends are someone you turn to when the going gets rough. (Hopefully your
kids will turn to you when they need a friend)
- Conversely friends don't lean on a friend who is not capable of supporting
them. (Hopefully you won't burden your children with adult problems)
How can you not be friends with your child?
